Buddy Up!  5th Graders & Kindergarteners are Finding Patterns

We all know that if we want to learn something, we can always ask a 5th grader.

To that end, our 5th grade students were the teachers yesterday afternoon, as they each took a Kindergartner under their wing for a pattern hunt.

Each Kindergartner had their own personal 5th grade buddy to walk with them and their iPads around the school to find patterns.

They helped the Kindergartners describe the patterns they saw and helped them take photos of each pattern.

Afterwards they came back to the classroom and helped their buddy recreate one of the patterns they photographed using Draw Free.

What great collaboration! I am working with fifth grade students in creating the alphabet on their ipads by searching for letters within the environment. I may have them buddy up with kinder to share the learning. Thank you!

Thanks, Laura!
I think you'll find when you do the buddy work, that it will be more about the relationships than the iPads. They are all so comfortable with their technology now. But the Kindergartners getting to have a 5th grader as their personal teacher was very special. And the 5th graders having the responsibility of teaching a Kindergartner about patterns gave them a great sense of worth.

This was a magical afternoon for our 5th graders. Our students commented "This was the best school day ever! When can we do this again!"
