An important part of the Language Arts curriculum for First Grade is the Daily 5 Cafe. Students work with all areas of the Cafe over the course of each week.

First Grade Teacher, Heather Chapman has added a new dimension to the "Read to Self" Daily 5 Pick.  She has named it " Read to Self with iPads."

Inspired by a blog post from Mrs Wideen's blog, Heather adapted her Fluency Station activity to fit the tools we have.

She found some inexpensive ear buds with microphones that work well with our iPads.

Mrs. Wideen's Self Evaluation sheet worked perfectly for this activity.
We especially liked the "goal you want to work on next time" item.

And our eBackpack program provided an easy and efficient work flow.

Mrs. Chapman modeled the process of picking a book from their leveled reading basket; then getting a set of microphone ear buds, directions, and an evaluation sheet from the basket.

She demonstrated how to plug in the earbuds and use the microphone, and how to follow the steps on the directions sheet to record their reading to self; then how to turn in their recorded passage in eBackpack.

Then the students were off and reading! Be sure to check out the video of one of our readers below the slide show on this page.
