VVE LEAP Initiative
Dear Valley View Parents,
During the past year I have shared information specific to the Eanes ISD vision for technology and how the latest computer tablets have brought affordability, durability, customization and applications to learning to our lives.
I am excited that after a year of planning, the LEAP (Learning and Engaging through Access and Personalization) initiative has finally LEAPT at Valley View with the distribution of class sets of iPads to all 2nd and 3rd grade classrooms.
We are so very proud and excited to support our 2nd and 3rd grade teachers as they work with students to explore, learn and pilot student engagement and personalization in learning through the deliberate use of iPads for instruction.
While every grade level team is eager to reap benefits from innovative learning tools, the campus Technology Vision Team at each elementary campus was charged with selecting two grade levels to pilot the iPad initiative. Some of the selection criteria included: availability to attend summer training; willingness to take risks; dedication to increased time commitment to planning/organization/research/implementation of iPads; and desire to work collaboratively with teachers across the district to identify the most effective and collaborative methods in which to implement iPads into instruction.
This enormous commitment is one the 2nd and 3rd grade teachers are taking very seriously. Their success and that of their students will help determine the pace at which we introduce iPads to additional grade levels. While we are confident that we do not know and cannot anticipate all the challenges and rewards that will come from this initiative, we are committed to making a positive educational impact on our students with increased opportunities for more personalized learning experiences. These are exciting times!
We continue to take student use and responsibility very seriously. Giving access to tablet computers in the classroom is a carefully constructed process that takes into account the age of the students and how the curriculum is best presented. We embrace the opportunity to systematically teach, practice and monitor digital citizenship.
The list of advance preparation is exhaustive, but some highlights include thoughtful protection of our students through: the firewall in place for all District technology (desktop, laptop) also applies to tablet computers (iPads); district-managed iTunes account managed by adults, not students; pre-loaded applications for learning (not games); and technology introduction lessons about care and responsibility for the device and learning.
I invite you to take a look at the EISD website, which has more information on LEAP, including FAQ’s, videos, news stories and how this relates to Strategy IV in our District's Strategic Plan. The LEAP Initiative is online here: http://www.eanesisd.net/leap.
Excitedly,
Jennifer Dusek
